For addition at guard dogs training, you need to train your dog to obey only to his master, family members if possible, not to accept commands from others. The guard dogs should have to be able to know which one is his master.

This “obey only” training is very important and one of critical point in guard dogs training. This one must be perfect trained if you don’t want your guard dogs be fooled by intruders just because they use the same commands or hand signals. Never forget to train your guard dogs to accept treats or any rewards only from you the master, the dog shouldn’t be persuaded by the treats or rewards given by strangers.

Second is barking training. You need to train your guard dog to bark and alert the family members when strangers get close to your house on your designed space between the dog and the strangers until you command him to stop. This training will make your guard dogs bark at people that come across his territory and not to bark at every people who just passing by, then it would become barking problem. Give the dog’s treats or reward every time he barks at the right time and space or territory. During the training and it will be done in no time.

Third aggressive training. You should teach your guard dogs for being unaggressive towards other animal like cats, squirrel and other dogs. Just train the dogs by calling him name and command him to stay when he is going to bark and chase the other animals when seen one.

The guard dogs also need to be trained for aggressive action just in case like chasing and attack intruder if have to. Usually guard dogs are trained to prevent and alert the owner for intruders not to chase and get them down like dogs in the K9 unit. The guard dogs attack only if they are threatened potentially and chase the intruders within house boundaries, it is not safe for dogs without special training to chase intruders outside the house.

Fourth is socialization. Your guard dogs need to be socialized at your home with family members and others pets. Other than teach your dogs you family members also need to be teach how to socialized and interact with your guard dogs so the training commands and hand signals used to train the guard dogs stay the same.

Last is train your dog always with responsibility, love, and much attention. Guard dogs got no different with companion dog for this point. They need your love and care every time and just believe that they will give you more than expected.

It is very important steps so the dog will not consider the family members and other pets as a threat for you and him and will protect them as yourself. This also will make the bond between your guard dogs and the whole family gets stronger.

I have a male Cocker Spaniel dog he is 02.5 years old I got him 09 months ago ,he has a very weak personality as some times he hides under my bed if something threatens him, I some times act like someone strange from the house by covering my face and making sounds as if some one intruded the apartment he freaks and hides some times but when he hears some one on the stairs out side the apartment he barks as if he is really a guard dog.pls advise how to make him a real guard dog as raising a cat maybe better than him, also he freaks when I use a lighter or any thing with light even the remote control if I pointed it to him he goes and hide..

    Thanks & B.Regards

    Hi there Tamer Adel,
Actually this Cocker Spaniel breed is not designed to be a guard dog, from my research and learning he is a poor guard dog, but he can make a good watch dog. That’s why he hides when hears someone entering your apartment and barking when hearing someone aproaching your apartment. He barks to let you know someone is aproaching not to guard the room. This Cocker Spaniel can be a wonderful companion dog. Give him much exercises and good socialization.
