Leash Training – Leash Training Guide
New dog owners usually look down upon the dog leash training. They feel that leash training is unimportant training to be done early, it can wait after other training.
But if your dog is a big size breed and might weigh about 50 pounds or more, you’ll find that leash training is very important one and need to be done as early as possible when the dog still young puppy. Just imagine when you walk with your dog that never has leash training before. Then something is attracting him and the dog start to drag you around to chase that thing, while your power is not enough to stop him and the dog will not stop when you pull the leash. This dog walk time will become nightmare for you right?
To complete this leash training first you need to get your dog used to wear the collar and leash together and feel comfortable with it, this session is fairly quick and simple. Next step is to train the dog to stay at the same side of you when walking with you and behave well, follow the command that been given like stop, stay, sit, go potty and other commands. This training will take some time and need patience, there is no instance method for this, but you’ll get the great advantages in the future with your dog.
Many questions are frequently asked by new dog owners about this leash training. The most frequently asked question among them are about the length of dog leash, the material of dog leash are made of, type of dog leash and how to stop the dog pulling the leash.
There are many different method of leash training used by dog owners or trainers out there. I believe that every way of leash training and also other type of dog training has their own advantages and disadvantages. So you can follow or mix the dog leash training method with your own for the best result, choose the best leash training method that fit your condition. Just remember that negative dog leash training like punishing or torturing your dog is highly discouraged and won’t make your dog understand your purpose, at worst condition they’ll fear of you.
From my research many dog trainers and owners agree the length of the leash should be no more than 6 feet. Whether it is puppy or adult dog, 6 feet leash should be enough for the dog to move around sniffing and exploring the area around dog walking way. This leash length also fit for you to take control of the dog movement and pull the leash if your dog start chasing something and make him stop.
There are two popular materials for dog leash training. Nylon dog leashes and leather dog leashes. Nylon dog leashes are easy to wash and have many kind of colour design, the disadvantages of this nylon leashes are it can make your hand burned when the dog is strongly pull the leash. For leather dog leash it will last for quite long time and very strong, easy to clean, more elegant and look great. With this leather dog leashes you can hold and control your dog more firmly and your grip won’t get slip when the dog pull the leash.
