Guard Dogs – Tips on Train Guard Dogs

Have you ever known how to train guard dogs before read this article? Most people will say that kind of dog training should be handled by certified dog trainers that specialized to train guard dogs.

But it is not impossible for us to train guard dogs by our own. This guard dogs training require several important steps that need to be done. We can learn these training techniques from books, videos, seminars and even from the trainer at some dog training classes.

When doing this guard dogs training we need complete information about our dog’s behavior. Different breed means different approaching on guard dogs training.

This guard dogs training will have better result if done earlier when dogs still at young age. From the fact we know if the guard dogs training done at adult age, some might bothered with other skills that had been trained before, which make the dogs confused and harder to learn. But it doesn’t mean you can’t train older dogs, just slower to understand than expected.

As most people said, for better result you should left this guard dogs training to professional dog trainers that have so much experience on this kind of training. They are also having more teaching and approaching techniques for many breeds of guard dogs.

For other kind of dog training like obedience, hunting and agility training, we can train the dogs to master this dog’s skills on our own at home. Because it is much easier than train guard dogs. Then it is time to try to train your guard dogs at home other than gets them trained at training club.

Here are some tips on how to train guard dogs that might help you.

First tips at guard dogs training are to master the basic dog obedience training. Master at this point is the dog should be able to respond positively and quickly to every each of command given by its master. For better result combine with hand signals together with the command such like come, sit, down, stay, stop, wait and many other as needed. Remember to use the same hand signals and commands so the dog will respond to your commands appropriately and right away.

For addition at guard dogs training, you need to train your dog to obey only to his master, family members if possible, not to accept commands from others. The guard dogs should have to be able to know which one is his master.

This “obey only” training is very important and one of critical point in guard dogs training. This one must be perfect trained if you don’t want your guard dogs be fooled by intruders just because they use the same commands or hand signals. Never forget to train your guard dogs to accept treats or any rewards only from you the master, the dog shouldn’t be persuaded by the treats or rewards given by strangers.

Second is barking training. You need to train your guard dog to bark and alert the family members when strangers get close to your house on your designed space between the dog and the strangers until you command him to stop. This training will make your guard dogs bark at people that come across his territory and not to bark at every people who just passing by, then it would become barking problem. Give the dog’s treats or reward every time he barks at the right time and space or territory. During the training and it will be done in no time.

Third aggressive training. You should teach your guard dogs for being unaggressive towards other animal like cats, squirrel and other dogs. Just train the dogs by calling him name and command him to stay when he is going to bark and chase the other animals when seen one.

The guard dogs also need to be trained for aggressive action just in case like chasing and attack intruder if have to. Usually guard dogs are trained to prevent and alert the owner for intruders not to chase and get them down like dogs in the K9 unit. The guard dogs attack only if they are threatened potentially and chase the intruders within house boundaries, it is not safe for dogs without special training to chase intruders outside the house.

Fourth is socialization. Your guard dogs need to be socialized at your home with family members and others pets. Other than teach your dogs you family members also need to be teach how to socialized and interact with your guard dogs so the training commands and hand signals used to train the guard dogs stay the same.

Last is train your dog always with responsibility, love, and much attention. Guard dogs got no different with companion dog for this point. They need your love and care every time and just believe that they will give you more than expected.

It is very important steps so the dog will not consider the family members and other pets as a threat for you and him and will protect them as yourself. This also will make the bond between your guard dogs and the whole family gets stronger.
